The history of Kenilworth
Kenilworth is situated between Claremont and Wynberg and is home to the Famous Kenilworth Racecourse. It is approximately 14km from Cape Town via the M5 and N2 highway and 17km from Cape Town International Airport via the N2. The suburb developed around the Kenilworth Racecourse. Previously known as The African Turf Club, it was officially founded in 1802. The first horse race in the Cape took place in 1797. It was such a great success that a four day racing event was held every autumn and spring. The first real course, however was laid out in 1882. Kenilworth's history might be all about horse racing but today, this suburb has an array of restaurants and pubs that are all worth a visit. If a big variety of cuisine and laid back atmosphere is your idea of a good time, be ready to spend a lot of time here. Considering the fact that this suburb was developed around one of the biggest events on the social calendar, it is easy to see why it puts so much importance on fun loving, social activities.
